Granted, Steve hadn't exactly made any moves to try and cover up the mark on his neck, but then again, he didn't exactly see the need. He'd had plenty of bumps and bruises in his lifetime, and he's pretty sure most people would rule it out as another scrape taken in the midst of apprehending a suspect.

Then again, most people aren't Kono Kalakaua.

He knows Danny's pissed. He'd have to be pretty oblivious not to know Danny's pissed, but he also doesn't see or process through all of the worst-case scenarios that Danny's mind is probably running through at the moment. And he's not going to let the day end without the two of them talking about this. A few hours later, he's standing on Danny's front step with a six pack in one hand and a sheepish look on his face, scratching the back of his neck with his free hand before reaching for the door to knock.

Danny hasn't packed a suitcase, but boy, has it crossed his mind the once or twice. He heads to the door, half-expecting the Governor to be standing there, ready to give him a piece of her mind. Steve, well, Steve is option number two. Steve with beers actually helps. "I can let the beers in, but I'm not so sure about you just yet."

Steve frowns, looking down at the floor and then back up at Danny without really moving his head, in this sideways glance like he's almost afraid to stare directly at him in anticipation of the kind of expression he'll end up seeing on his partner's face.

"Well, consider the beers a peace offering."

"No, see, you come in here," Danny insists, spitting out the words like he's angry, but he's not. He's not really angry at all. He's just feeling helpless, that now everyone knows about this. "And then we're gonna do something. And then, then, more people will find out and knowing my luck, Max will probably walk in on us fucking and do you know what's gonna happen after that, Steve, do you?"

"Well, I don't think Max would ever leave the lab," Steve starts, but then catches on quickly enough that that really wasn't the point Danny was trying to make, couldn't be farther from the actual point in question. "Never mind," he quickly and quietly adds, shifting the six pack from one hand to the other.

Danny exhales loudly and longly, stepping away from the door when Steve starts getting real antsy and the puppy-look is probably seconds away from showing up. "Get in here, you goof," he sighs, heading inside to collapse on the couch, rubbing at his temples. "So, Kono knows. Kono so very much knows."

"Yeah. Well, I'm not all that surprised," Steve admits, following Danny inside and putting the beers down on the coffee table before taking a seat on the couch next to Danny, though he leaves a little space in between them. "You know if she's talked to anyone else yet?"

"Well, it's Kono," Danny points out. "So I assume Chin knows, so then Malia and half the family knows. Which means Kamekona, which means a lot of criminals, which means a lot of police, which means the Governor. So, yeah, yeah, I think a lot of people know," Danny says irritably.

"All those people in a couple of hours," Steve murmurs, pretending to muse out loud even as he struggles to fight off a grin. "Really? That many?"

"Do you actually think this is funny?" Danny spits out, his back rising like a cat's when it's in danger. "Are you actually joking about this? You are, god! Do you know what's going to happen when Rachel finds out? Do you actually know?"

"Tell me," Steve replies, his tone quiet as he leans back against the couch and regards Danny with a more serious expression. "I want to know, Danny. What's going to happen when Rachel finds out about us?"

"This is the woman who practically remanded custody from me because of one gun at a football game," Danny reminds Steve, making sure to speak using his hands. "You really think that she's not gonna start getting freakish when she finds out I'm schtupping my boss?"

"Partner, not boss," Steve quickly corrects, but then gets right back into the main part of the conversation. "And have you ever thought about just telling her yourself, before she has to hear it through some ridiculous gossip chain?"

Danny sighs heavily, rubbing at his face with his palm. "And see, Steve, the other scary part, the one that's terrifying me more than Grace finding out she might have a new step-daddy, is the idea of the Governor finding out. Because, do you know what's gonna happen then?" His voice is practically raw.

"Danny, how is this in any way Governor Jameson's business?" Steve interrupts, looking at him like he feels ridiculous this is even entering into the conversation - which, right now, he does. "If it gets to be an issue, we can sit down and discuss it with her like adults, fill out the necessary paperwork, whatever. I'm not going to run around advertising the fact that I'm in love with you, but I'm not going to try to hide it, either."

Danny had a witty retort in line for that, he did. Honestly. Except now that Steve is talking, Danny's pretty sure that he heard him say something that's making him just a little bit speechless. Which, for Danny, is impressive. He digs his fingers into the couch and just gapes at Steve.

"What?" Steve asks, glancing at Danny because there's actually nothing coming out of his mouth right now, and under most circumstances that would be a welcome thing, but here it just makes him nervous. "What is it?"

Danny softens, his back relaxing, and he takes the opportunity to lean forward and practically crawl over Steve's body to kiss him so very thoroughly, rewarding him for actually getting up off his ass and saying the right thing for once in his long, Navy life.

Steve's still not completely sure what he said or did to get this reaction, but then Danny kisses him and it all makes sense, a click into place and Steve kisses him back, fingers threading up into Danny's hair and his other hand trailing over the muscles of Danny's side through his shirt. "I do, you know," he murmurs, when the kiss eventually breaks.

Danny eases back, not even bothering to ease back. He lets his vision focus on a spot on Steve's cheek, fixated there. "She's gonna find out and she's gonna reassign me," he says, telling Steve his greatest fear about the governor. "And then what m'I gonna do without you, huh? I just figured out how to tame you."

"I assigned you to this task force, Danny," Steve replies, his voice insistent. "I did. Which means I have a say in where you go and what happens to you, and if the Governor even considers re-assigning you, she's going to have me to deal with."

Danny makes a little sound at the back of his throat, the kind that comes right before mauling Steve and giving him hickeys, and he has to focus on the point again. Which is where he might get a little smug. "So, in love with me, huh?"

"So, you heard that, did you?" Steve's own smirk is lazy and slow to form, but it's there, and he reaches out to rest a hand on the back of Danny's neck, fingertips massaging gently.

Danny leans forward again, like a pounce, getting on all fours atop Steve and leaning down to kiss him harder. "You're so goddamn lucky, McGarrett, that I'm so crazy about you I can't even sleep at night anymore, cuz I practically had a panic attack today! I still am, I still..." he clenches his fist tightly, Steve's hair gripped there.

"That's because you weren't sleeping over like you were supposed to," Steve declares, reaching up to tenderly tousle Danny's hair. "The bed's too empty right now."
