Six days had passed and every single morning, Danny woke up in a hotel bed in New Jersey. He keeps expecting his luck to change, but somehow it doesn't. Somehow, he keeps ending up exactly where he wants to be. It's weird. It's beyond weird, but he doesn't want to complain about a good thing. The one thing that shies away from good, though, is that the longer he stays (and the more family dinners he takes part in), the more he's realizing he's going to have to tell them about him and Steve.

Hell, he's also had a niggling idea in his mind, but he's tucking it away -- for now.

"Steve," he murmurs when it's Day Six and he wakes up at home, right where he belongs. "You up?" Danny's migrated to the other half of the bed to try and splay out, taking advantage of the sheer comfort that a hotel mattress provides.

Steve's still half-asleep, sprawled out on his back on the other side of the mattress, one arm flung up over his face to shield his face from the sunlight creeping in through the bedroom windows, but when Danny calls his name, he stirs, speaking from beneath his arm without lifting it.

"Am now," he mumbles, exhaling slowly.

Danny's been awake for a while. He's lying on his back and staring at the ceiling, picking at his grey t-shirt every now and again (his police academy one). He takes his time looking Steve over, embracing the way he always looks so goddamn inviting first thing in the morning. "You okay if we do dinner at my parents tonight? I know I keep saying I'll cook, I just figure I can never compete with Ma."

"Mmm?" Steve rolls over onto his stomach, his face half-pressed against the pillow, one eye lazily blinking open as he puts Danny in his field of vision.

"Yeah, I guess we could do that," he agrees, once he realizes where they are - still in the hotel room, still in Jersey.

"What is this, huh?" Danny asks, poking at Steve's stomach when he gets all lazy-SEAL on him. "You can cope with the island, Hawaii doesn't get you tired beyond belief, but six days in New Jersey and you're a slug to compete with the laziest out there?" he asks in disbelief.

"Bed's comfy," Steve mumbles, by way of an excuse - though really, this is Danny's home more than his, and he's content to do whatever Danny wants to do here, including linger in bed a bit longer.

"Yeah, and I can think of other things that are comfy, too," Danny teases, poking at Steve's chest as he lazily straddles him, both palms splayed on Steve's chest as he leans down. "I'm thinking, today, today's the day that we tell 'em that we're more than just dating."

Steve groans again, but for a different reason entirely, his hands sliding up to rest along the breadth of Danny's thighs, fingertips digging in slightly. "Yeah? So what are we going to tell them, specifically? Maybe we should get our stories straight."

Danny leans forward slightly, smiling before he presses a slow, chaste kiss to Steve's lips. "How about," he murmurs softly, "I tell them that I'm engaged and looking to get married soon."

"How soon are we talking here, babe?" Steve whispers, eyes still blinking slowly, his hands easing into a gentle smoothing over Danny's thighs. "I can probably venture a guess as to how some of your sisters might react."

"You mean how Lauren will cry tears of genuine distress when she realizes that you're really off the market?" Danny scoffs, cupping Steve's ass with his hands. "I don't know. I kind of want to get married with them watching," he admits. "Is that so bad?"

"No," Steve replies, after a beat, reaching up to push some stray pieces of hair away from Danny's forehead, tracking the path of a pillow wrinkle across his face. "This is the kind of thing where you need to have your family there. You should have them there."

[haolehothead]

"You know," Danny murmurs idly, tipping his head to the other side. "It's before the whole mess in Honolulu," he says, softly. "There isn't any reason we can't call Mary, maybe your Dad, fly 'em out here. I mean, we don't know how long this is gonna last, babe, but...I'd like you to have your family there, too."

Steve shifts his hips, more to spread his weight out more evenly, his legs stretching out down the length of the bed while he rests hands on Danny's thighs. "You're seriously thinking about doing this now, aren't you? Right here, in Jersey?"

"Give me one good reason I shouldn't be," Danny replies. The more he thinks about it, the more he genuinely thinks that he wants to do it. "It doesn't have to be a big affair. I mean, I'm talking a civil ceremony with some papers and our families. Maybe a nice dinner afterwards."

"I mean - if you want to do this, if you really want to do this, Danny - I'm saying that I think it could be a good thing, since we're here," Steve admits, nodding after another beat. "That being said, telling them is going to be kind of unavoidable at this rate."

[haolehothead]

"Yeah, well, just wear the ring," Danny murmurs, sliding down off Steve's body in order to curl up next to him, keeping one hand on his ass. "And then wave your hand around a lot so it catches the light."

"Mmm. Been wearing it, though I think yours will be the one that catches the light before mine does," Steve points out, grinning slowly. He's fully aware of Danny's penchant for vigorous hand motions, especially when he's trying to make his point or feeling particularly impassioned about something.

[haolehothead]

"Yeah, but I'm wearing my ring from my former marriage," Danny points out the obvious, pressing slow kisses down Steve's neck as he amasses the blankets in order to get more comfortable. "For them, that's nothing out of the ordinary. But you -- you with that ring, that's definitely something else."

"That reminds me," Steve replies, tilting his chin up reflexively as a deep chuckle emanates from his chest, low and rumbling. "We need to get you a new ring, babe. I don't know how I feel about recycling and re-using that one."

[haolehothead]

Danny holds up his hand, staring at the ring. "What, it's a ring," he points out. "I mean, it's not even a nice ring, it's just a gold band. Isn't that pretty much what guys get to get married these days? All I managed to get you was a nice piece of machinery. It's not even silver or gold."

"Yeah, but - it's from you," Steve points out, holding up his hand to look at the small metal band. "I just thought, you know - maybe it'd be nice if I could get you something that was from me."

[haolehothead]

Danny leans in and steals a quick peck. "I'd like that, babe," he murmurs softly, trying to imagine what a ring from Steve would look like. "Just...don't you dare give me a ring from any piece of machinery or weaponry."

"Hey, there's an idea," Steve replies, grinning crookedly as he shifts into a lazy stretch across the bed, his thumb idly running against the ring on his own finger. "Could melt a bullet down and make a ring that way. Thanks for the suggestion." He's still grinning while he steals a kiss from Danny, chuckling as he starts to rise out of bed before he can protest.

"Don't you dare," Danny whines his protest, trying to sit up and drag Steve back into bed with him. "Don't get up, we don't have to be anywhere. Don't get up. Just -- just come back to bed, would you?"

"First you call me lazy," Steve points out, feeling the need to recap as he sits up, idly rolling his shoulders, "and then you want me back in bed with you? Hate to break it to you, Danno, but you're only managing to send a mixed message."
