Danny is not having the best fucking morning. First of all, his knee hurts. It hurts worse than it has hurt since the first minute of injury when he'd twisted it and the ACL just tore. Second of all, his back hurts. And it's no surprise given that he wakes up on his shitty pull-out bed.

Then he realizes: shitty pull-out bed and actually experiences a moment of sheer glee. He is home, he is back. And then he gets right back to being pissy because he just got happy about Hawaii.

He fumbles for his cell phone and habit tells him to call Steve.

He calls Kono instead, willing her to pick-up. "Hey," he greets, when she does. "I know it's crazy early, but you feel like shave-ice on the beach? And yes, it really is Danny. Danny Williams, I just, I could use a friendly face right now." Just to make sure he's not insane.

They've been there. From the sounds of it, they never even left and Danny's living on something like cloud nine right now. "Grace? She's amazing, she's perfect, she's a Williams," he boasts. "I'm gonna see if I can get her out of school early and hit the beach, see if McGarrett will let me use the private sand so I don't have to worry about tourist idiots."

"Ooo, classy," Kono teased, then tilted her head a little in invitation. "I could tag along, if you want? Give her that surf lesson? I know the ex-wife is probably paying some slicked up California guy to do it but the only way to learn how to surf is to talk to the waves and you're not going to get that from a haole. Besides, you might even learn something."

Danny freezes up slightly. Even if Steve doesn't remember, there's going to be a whole pile of awkward for him to navigate through and if Steve does remember, they're going to be under Kono's watch for hours.

Speechlessness on Danny isn't exactly how he lives, so for an awkward moment, he just looks like a fish out of water. "Me and...at Steve's place," he says, face getting a little heated as all the blood starts rushing in. "You uh, you sure? I mean, you don't have plans with what's-his-face, Ben? You don't need to," he gives a strangled laugh, "you know, sit around and watch Steve give me an aneurysm, but if, but if you're around, then you should drop by for dinner or something or hey, whatever Steve does."

"Ben and me? Oh, no. Ship has sailed. It would be a really bad idea to get involved again."

Not that she wouldn't want to; Ben Bass had been the love of her life as a teenager but now, well. It was too complicated. Too many years between them and she had a good thing going with Five-0 that she didn't want to screw up.

"Sounds to me like you don't want me to come, though. Are you guys planning something and leaving the rookie out?"

Danny feels like he could shove his face into the sand and still, still, he would not be able to come out of this decent. "What? No!" he says, scoffing and maybe his voice hits an octave it shouldn't before he clears his throat and tries to remember that Steve could just be Steve. "No, you should totally come, really, you should. Really."

He's said really one too many times, he thinks.

Kono tilted her head, a little skeptical. "Uh huh. You sound really cagey, even for you Danny. Did something happen? Did I say something wrong?"

It wasn't like Kono to worry about something like that but with Danny acting so weird...

"God, no, you're fine, Kono," Danny says, exhaling the words and trying to settle himself to rights. He takes a deep breath and smiles apologetically. "I guess something happened, but it's not gonna change anything, especially at Five-O. I just, I had some time to think about things."

Which is the nicest way ever of saying 'I got kidnapped to another, crazier island'.

"You know for all my talk about how you're a mainlander," Kono said cautiously, not wanting to spook Danny off if he was going to open up to her, "You're family. Like Steve, like Chin Ho. If something's going on, you can always talk to me."

She clapped his shoulder lightly, friendly.

Danny shifts with slight discomfort, knowing that he's kind of lying by admission if he doesn't tell her. And he hates lying, he really does, it makes him burn up inside, it makes him feel furious and angry. "Kono, I'm...kind of dating someone."
