He takes his time, avoiding the room that he knows Hermione to be in and getting as far as he can. When he's three rooms away, he starts to leave a couple traces -- smudges on the wall, small pieces of lint on the floor -- and when he's four rooms down, he starts to make a little bit of noise, just to give her a hint.
